After purchasing LED displays, many companies find that their employees lack the necessary technical expertise and are often at a loss when faced with issues such as black screens, distorted images, or flickering. They are forced to wait for an engineer to arrive on-site, which delays normal use for promotional campaigns, events, and other purposes.
MileStrong has prepared this beginners-friendly LED display troubleshooting guide. No professional repair experience is required—simply follow the self-diagnosis steps, which progress from simple to complex, to help you quickly distinguish between minor contact issues and hardware damage.
Important Note: Before performing any inspection procedures, please turn off the main power to the LED display to prevent plugging or unplugging cables while the power is on. If you smell a burning odor or notice that the wiring is hot to the touch, immediately turn off the power. Do not continue with the self-inspection; contact a qualified technician instead.
General Basic Self-Check Steps
When you encounter a problem with your LED display, don’t immediately assume that there is damage to the equipment. First, complete the following three-step basic test:
Power Cycle: Turn off the power to the display, the control computer, and the video processor; wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
Temporary communication problems and programs freezes can be resolved by a power cycle.
- Careful Inspect Cable Connections:
- Check for a broken power switch;
- Inspect the power cord, network cable, and module ribbon cables for any loose connections, damage or fraying.
- Unplug and firmly reinsert the network cable and ribbon cables;
Gently clean any dust buildup from the connectors.
- Determine the extent of the malfunction: Identify whether the problem affects the entire screen or only a specific area.
- Problems affecting the entire screen are mostly caused by power supply or main control signal;
- Partial blackout or distorted display in specific areas is generally caused by the flex cable, module, or power supply in that area.

Common Faults and Self-Troubleshooting Solutions
The LED Display Is Completely Black with No Image At All
First, check the power supply: Inspect the power distribution box switch and whether the power indicator light on the screen is lit.
- If the power indicator light is off, this indicates a power outage;
- If the indicator light is on but there is no image, check the HDMI cable and the Ethernet connection to the transmitter card, and confirm that the control software has started properly.
Partial Black Screen
Check the power supply and module cables corresponding to the affected area.
Turn off the power, then unplug and reinsert the module cables.
If the issue persists after reinserting the cables, it is most likely a hardware failure in the module or power supply. In this case, it requires repair or replacement by a technical personnel.
Screen Stripes,or Distorted Images
This is mostly due to a signal transmission problems. Check the receiver card’s network cable and the module’s flat ribbon cable in turn. If the problem persists after replacing the ribbon cable, check the configuration file in the control software; missing files will continue to cause screen flickering.
Screen Flickering
First, check whether the power supply voltage is stable, and avoid connecting multiple high-power devices to the same circuit;
Second, check the length and quality of the Ethernet cable, as long cables are prone to signal interference;
Finally, you can adjust the refresh rate in the control software to improve the display quality.
Screen Color Cast, Missing Colors, or Uneven Color Distribution
Focus on checking if the module cable is plugged in backwards or if the pins are oxidized.
If the cable is normal, the problem likely lies with aging LED chips or driver chips; self-repair is not recommended.
Self-Check Warning:
If any of the following conditions occur, stop operation and contact the supplier:
1. The power cord or power module is hot to the touch or emits an unusual odor;
2. The circuit board or module components are visibly blackened or burned;
3. The problem persists even after repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cord; this indicates hardware damage.
